Description

For the month of April, I'm doing An Alien A Day! Kind of like that 'a drawing a day' meme, only with (my favorite) aliens!

THIS is a Zergling! They're a small, vicious little attack unit of the Zerg species from the Blizzard game, Starcraft. Their wiki page is here: [link] .

The Zerg were an insectoid species who bred troops by absorbing the genetic codes of other species, then modifying them. This was extremely awesome, and all of the different breeds of Zerg are cool as hell, even if the illustrations of them are extremely inconsistent.

The Zerglings were bred out of the dune-runners of Zz'gash. Later Zerglings (from the sequel game) look much bulkier and are quadrupedal. This Zergling is therefore from an earlier, still-dune-runner-y cadre, before too much modifying went on and they weren't cute anymore.

Yeah that's the old school zergling alright. However I always found the orientation of the limbs odd. The scythes are clearly meant to be the attack weapon, but in the animations they flip out forwards and are used as front legs, even though they aren't designed for movement. The upper limbs don't seem to be used at all in any of the animations. In that orientation, the scythes would have to swing forwards then up above the shoulders to do some major damage. Were they placed upwards like in Starcraft 2 it takes a lot less effort to strike because the arms just have to swing down with gravity.
